Hate Fighters Network – Creative methods/workshops and products

Workshop 1–02 May 2016 – 10 participants

Topic of the workshop was introduction to the Hate Fighters program and general discussion about the problem of hate speech in general. In this workshop concept photo was introduced as method for promotion of the combat against hate speech. Participants have task to explore internet about current topics, brainstorming about topic and develop concepts for photos they are about to made next days. They also got new knowledge on how photography can be used to combat this social problem.

Workshop 2–03 May 2016 – 10 participants

Topics of this workshop were: hate speech in local communities and use of concept photography to address this problem. During this workshop participants discussed in the problems of hate speech in their local communities, their own experience regarding hate speech, if they were the victims or witnessed hate speech in their social circles (school, university, neighbourhood, friends and similar), how it affected them through round circle discussion. After that participants brainstormed key terms that can be used as concept for photography (such as: hate, love, discrimination, tolerance, sexism, inequality, anti-gypsism etc etc) in order to get into the topic. Every participant chose 5 terms to work on. Also, different forms/styles of photography were presented that can be used for this purpose (emoticons, light painting…).

Workshop 3–04 May 2016 – 10 participants

Topic of the workshop was the development of the concept photos. On this workshop every participant presented the terms they chose and discussed about them with the rest of the group what this term means, how it is best to present it, what technique to use, if a message should be added and similar. They discussed the equipment that will be used. They started to take first photos. At the end they presented what they did. Participants improved their knowledge on how to present a specific topic or term through concept photo. They learn about basic techniques of capturing photos (composition, rule of third, use of light, proper way to use photo camera, different type of lenses, possibility to combine photos in final product, photo editing software techniques etc).

Workshop 4–05 May 2016 – 10 participants

Purpose of workshop was the development of the concept photography. At the beginning participants reflected on previous workshop and what was discussed. Participants continued to do photo shooting by using no hate hearts, did light painting, Collage and other techniques. Terms that participants chose were gender equality, intolerance, hate speech in general, refugees. When photo shooting was finished, participant learned how to use programs for photo editing (PhotoShop and InDesign) and they started to work on the editing of their photos. Participants improved their knowledge on how to present a specific topic or term through concept photo. They also learned how to work with programs for photo editing for good photo results.

Workshop 5–06 May 2016 – 10 participants

On this workshop the topic was presentation of produced concept photos and development of the plan on how to use the products in the future actions for raising the awareness about hate speech problem in local community. The participants presented what they created through workshops. After this participants brainstormed about follow up activities – European Action Days and other actions they would like to organize in the city in order to inform people about the problem of hate speech as well as how to use the material – photos– they produced for this purpose. Organization of the exhibition was discussed too. Participants gained knowledge on how to prepare action plan for follow up activities.

Workshop 1–07 May 2016 – 15 participants

Topic of this workshop was introduction to the Hate Fighters program and discussion about the problem of hate speech in Bulgaria. There was introduced official song and choreography as method for promotion of the combat against hate speech. The workshop started with project introduction and work plan. Then continued with the presentation of official song “Stop Hate Speech” and choreography as a tool for promotion of the combat against hate speech. Different videos of choreography and flash mobs that were organized previously were presented to participants and after that was discussed how music, lyrics and dance can attract attention of people and raise awareness about important social issues.

Workshop 2–08 May 2016 – 15 participants

In this workshops were discussed effect of hate speech in local communities and dance as a tool to attract the attention of people through flash mobs, show cases and performances. During this workshop participants discussed in the problems of hate speech in their local communities, their own experience regarding hate speech, if they were the victims or witnessed hate speech in their social circles (schoolр university, neighbourhood, friends and similar), how it affected them through round circle discussion. After that discussion continued about dance as a tool that can be used to point out social problems or injustices, different ways of the use of dance to draw people’s attention. Participants became more aware of the problem of hate speech and how that affects them. They realized that hate speech is not someone else problem and realized the importance of being part of the fight with hate speech.

Workshop 3–14 May 2016 – 15 participants

Topic of the workshops was learning of the first part of “Stop Hate Speech” choreography. During this workshop the group learned the first part of choreography. Method was dance. Participants learned the steps that follow the lyrics of the first part of the song.  Participants increased their dancing skills and learned the first part of choreography. 

Workshop 4–15 May 2016 – 15 participants

Topic of the workshops was learning of the second part of “Stop Hate Speech” choreography. During this workshop the group learned the second part of choreography. Method was dance. Participants learned the steps that follow the lyrics of the second part of the song.  Participants increased their dancing skills and learned the second part of choreography.

Workshop 5–21 May 2016 – 15 participants

In this workshop, participants rehearsal of “Stop Hate Speech” choreography and discussed the plan on how to use the choreography in the future actions for combat against hate speech. During this workshop the group rehearsed the whole choreography. Method was dance. In the second part of the workshop, participants discussed how they will use what they learned in future actions. They make a program for flash mobs and future activities. Participants gained knowledge on how to plan and prepare future activities in fighting with hate speech using dance as a method.

Workshop 1–25 May 2016 – 10 participants

On this workshop was introduced to the Hate Fighters program and was made discussion about the problem of hate speech in general. Concept graphics was introduced as method for promotion of the combat against hate speech. Various techniques regarding graphics method are presented (illustration, poster, comics, collage etc.). Workshop for today included exploring the internet and media about tasks and topics that are established as goals and products. Later on, brainstorming Is on, and discussion is made about the examples provided by exploring internet and medias.

Workshop 2–26 May 2016 – 10 participants

Topics of the workshop were: hate speech in local communities and use of graphics to address this problem. In this workshop was presented products from previous projects and participants discussed them. During this workshop participants discussed in the problems of hate speech in their local communities, their own experience regarding hate speech, if they were the victims or witnessed hate speech in their social circles (school, university, neighbourhood, friends and similar), how it affected them through round circle discussion. After that participants brainstormed key terms that can be used as concept for the graphics (such as: hate, love, discrimination, tolerance, sexism, inequality, anti-gypsism etc etc) in order to get into the topic. Every participant chose 5 terms to work on, as well as the technique they want to work on.

Workshop 3–27 May 2016 – 10 participants

Purpose of this workshop was drawing of the concept graphics. At the beginning participants reflected on previous workshop and what was discussed. Sketches are analyzed and every participant presented the terms they chose and discussed about them with the rest of the group what this term means, how it is best to present it, what technique to use, if a message should be added and similar. They start to create drawings based on sketches, discussions, exploring and brainstorming. At the end they presented what they accomplished until that moment. Participants improved their knowledge on how to present a specific topic or term through graphic expression. Participants introduced traditional and modern techniques and materials of production. Overcoming obstacles in drawing like composition, perspective, materials etc.

Workshop 4–30 May 2016 – 10 participants

Topic of the workshop was drawing of the concept graphics. Every participant presented the terms and products of previous session they chose and discussed about them with the rest of the group what this term means, how it is best to present it, what technique they are using, if a message should be added and similar. Workshop continued with producing of products and ideas. At the end they presented what they accomplished until that moment. Participants improved their knowledge on how to present a specific topic or term through graphic expression. Participants provided better insight in creating of products and developing a general concept that includes different ideas and products.

Workshop 5–31 May 2016 – 10 participants

On this workshop was presented produced graphics was developed plan on how to use the products in the future actions for raising the awareness about hate speech problem in local community. The participants presented what they created through workshops. After that participants brainstormed about follow up activities – European Action Days and other actions they would like to organize in the city in order to inform greater number of people about the problem of hate speech as well as how to use the material – graphics – they produced for this purpose. Organization of the exhibition was discussed too. Participants gained knowledge on how to prepare action plan for follow up activities, and understanding entire process of creating final products in different techniques (illustration, poster, collage).

Products of workshops

As a result of workshops, was created:

33 concept photography’s and 33 concept graphics, related with 11 themes (8 March – International Women’s Day; 8 April  – Action day against antigypsism; 17 May  – Action day against homophobia and transphobia; 20 June – Action day in support of Refugees and Asylum Seekers; 30 July – International Friendship day; 6 July -Action day against islamophobia and Intolerance; 22 July – Action day in solidarity with victims of Hate Crimes; 21 September – Action day of Peace; 9 November – Action day against Fascism and Anti-semitism; 16 November – International Day of Tolerance; 10 December – Action day for Human Rights online)

Project results:

– 456 young people were educated to combat against hate speech using creative methods (photography, graphics, hip hop dance and music) and they were equipped with knowledge and skills for future work with young people in the field of combating against hate speech through 160 organized and implemented creative workshops.

– The number of young people who participated in different kind of activities such as flash mobs, exhibitions, events, action days was more than 9000.

– Beside this, there were more than 20.000 followers on social media which were used for the promotion of HFN and all its activities.

– 8 songs and videos were created through hip hop music workshops.

– More than 20 flash mobs were organized during the project

– During graphics creative workshops more than 200 concept graphics were created; concept graphics promote combat against hate speech and express the views of young people about this social problem

– Over 250 concept photos during the photography creative workshops were created; concept photos are products of young people’s points of view about problem of hate speech in our communities and how to combat against it

– During the project more than 15 exhibitions were organized independently or as a part of important city events in every partner country; exhibitions enabled a big number of people to learn not only about Hate Fighters program and HFN, but also to get to know about youth activism in the field of combat against hate speech.

– The awareness about the problem of hate speech was raised in local communities in 8 participating countries

– HFN member organizations build their capacities by getting new, educated activists, ready to implement variety of activities in the field of the combat against hate speech; every  organization is equipped with skills and competences to start new program at the local and European level and to raise

visibility of the whole program, as well as to increase local and national impact in their countries

– 456 young people became Hate Fighters and networked at the European level through joint combat against hate speech and also got opportunity to work with their peers from different countries

– The foundation of the strong Hate Fighters Network, which will increase the level of skills competences of young people through training’s, campaigns, workshops and other initiatives in the local communities and in this way strengthen the role of young people in peace-building activities and the combat against hate speech, is created.
